Roman Arches
While constructing an arch, a wooden frame is often used to support it. Most arches are made of wedge shaped blocks. The top, center stone is called the keystone. When the frame of the arch is removed, both sides of the arch press against the keystone and help support it.

Romans created their own concrete using a mixture of lime and volcanic sand. The concrete made using these items was very strong and durable, allowing the arch to support a lot of weight.
